Great add-on!
Pros:Great appearance; Good feel and control
Cons:None
Comments:I ordered my set of the Orion aluminum "5-dot" focus wheels at the same time as my 100mm f/6 refractor. I very much dislike the plain plastic wheels that come standard with most scopes. The aluminum ones are far more eye pleasing, but most importantly, I like the feel of the rubber grips around the outer edge. It makes the feel more substantial and gives the feeling of more precise control of the focuser. This was especially noticeable after dismantling the focuser, cleaning out the horrid Chinese grease (like glue), and relubricating with white lithium grease. Now the focuser feels more like that of a precision piece of machinery! These are well worth the price! Also one of the best add-ons for appearance at any price!
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesSep 7, 2007Orion Radial Aluminum Focus Wheels
Pros:Light weight aluminum; Nice design; Rubber grips.
Cons:None.
Comments:I can think of no better way to add to a scope's appearance and improve its focusing abilities, than to add a new set of focus wheels. Such is the case with Orion's "Radial Aluminum" focus wheels. The "Hot Wheel" inspired 5 dot design really added a sense of style and improved focusing on both my Orion 100mm f/6 and ST80. The focus wheels sold for about $25 in Orion's Spring 2005 catalog.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
In addition to the good looks department, the light weight aluminum wheels are circled and covered with a rubber grip material that has a nice tactile feel to it, and helps you to get a sure positive grip while focusing.....even on cold winter nights. Installation is usually a simple swap out on Synta scopes, remove old screw and plastic knobs....replace with new focus wheels and screws. Simple, and the improvement is immediate.
I wish Orion would return these and the other brass and aluminum focus wheels to its catalog sometime in the near future. There aren't many ways to get such a big return on such a small investment, but any of these focus wheels would be a sure bet.Sort by
