Orion's Padded Scope Case
Pros:Good protection for transporting a telescope.
Cons:No accessory pouches or shoulder strap.
Comments:I purchased Orion's Padded Scope Case #15164 for $64 to transport and store my Astroview 120ST scope. Having a backyard surrounded by tall trees, I spend a lot of time transporting my scope to better viewing areas.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The soft, dark blue nylon covered case is heavily padded with a thickly padded divider to keep the tube assembly separate from the mount and tripod. (Don't want to scratch the scope's glossy black enameled finish!) The case has velcro closures to hold the mount's counterweight shaft and weights. There are also velcro tabs to hold the divider in place which seems unnecessary since the divider extends the entire length and height of the case and cannot go anywhere once the case is zipped closed.
As mentioned in other reviews, it would be an improvement to include a zippered pouch or two for accessories like eyepieces or a finderscope. Of course, one can always use a separate accessory case which will probably offer better protection for eyepieces and finderscopes. The case has no attachments for a shoulder strap. While Orion's catalog says, "Handle straps fit nicely in the hand and most are long enough to sling over a shoulder," the strap on my case would not do so comfortably.
In conclusion, Orion's Padded Scope Case offers some nice protection for the scope, mount and tripod. The thick padding inside and outside does a good job of protecting my investment from bumps, dents and dings. While I wouldn't dare attempt to check-in my scope for an airline flight (I'm convinced they really do make a deliberate effort to damage luggage and cargo!) it's a great way to protect a scope for traveling or storage.Aug 29, 2007Orion Carry Case for ST80
Pros:Fits the scope perfectly; Padded; Durable material.
Cons:No extra pockets for accessories; No shoulder strap; Not water proof.
Comments:It was a choice between a hard or soft carry case for my Orion ST80. I went with the latter and have not regretted it. The case is made of a dark blue poly material that can be easily cleaned with a wet cloth. The heavy duty zipper runs the length of the bag and ends at a padded circle that is shaped to fit the front of the scope.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
The entire scope, with the 6x30 finder attached, can be easily zippered up securely. There are two carry straps that come together to form the tote handles. In addition, there are two nylon loops at both ends of the bag so you could possibly attach a shoulder strap if desired.
I would like to have seen some inside or outside pockets that could hold some additional accessories, and water proofing would have been another plus. However, for the price, it gets the job done quite nicely.

Pros:Well padded and easy to use
Cons:None
Comments:I needed something to carry my 10" DOB. I found the Orion Padded Carrying case at an Astronomy Shop in Tucson, AZ. I bought it and boy do I love it. Fits my DOB to a "T", well padded and has strong carrying handles. When not carrying the telescope I use the case as a cover for the telescope while it is setup and not in use - particulary handy for two day star parties out in the desert. Would highly recommend this carrying case.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? YesJan 12, 2007Works for c8-n celestron also
Pros:Easy to carry and rolls up for storage when not in use
Cons:Could use some more padding
Comments:I bought this for my Celestron c8n to store around the house. I will also use it to carry the OTA in from outside (or out). Fits pretty good - a little large in length but I just use a hunting seat in one end (round).
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
I bought Orion model 15160 its for the Skyview 8" reflector and that scope is about the same size. Nice straps and zipper has a fair amount of padding. Would like some extra but does the job. And costs a lot less than a hard case.Sort by
