Orion Lanthanum Superwide 8mm
Pros:Lanthanum glass, Excellent fit and finish, No blackouts, Decent on fast scopes.
Cons:Expensive, Minimum lateral color.
Comments:In comparing different high power eyepieces, some come out of the case not being the one you thought you'd see. This 8mm fits into that category. I evaluated it in my friend's f/5 XT10 Newtonian reflector.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
This eyepiece is expensive at over $225. With a nice 65 degree field of view and an excellent 20mm of eye relief, it also had excellent fit and finish that is typical of Orion. In viewing the sliver of the Moon and then Mars, I saw no blackouts which is nice with an 8mm EP. However I did notice some, but not much, lateral color. It didn't bother the viewing but I did want to state that we saw it. In star hoping, stars were pinpoint and contrast was very good. Our opinion was that this ocular would be best during very dark and windless nights to perform at its best.
I don't know if I'd put up over two hundred bucks for this eyepiece, but with Lanthanum glass one would think that performance would have been somewhat better. This barlows very well and is threaded for filters.Sort by
