5.0 Good choice for beginning astronomer who wears glasses

      Pros:

Great optics at reasonable price, solid construction, long eye relief for eyeglass-wearers

      Cons:

7x50's may be too bulky/heavy for hikers and backpackers

      Comments:

The Orion Scenix 7X50 fits the needs of this beginning astronomer: 1) reasonably priced new at $100 (I bought it as an open-box for $70!); 2) solid build and optics without being too heavy; 3) excellent eye relief.

Many folks (including the previous reviewer) seem to think this 7X50 setup is suboptimal for astronomy, implying that higher mag binoculars would be better. I disagree completely. The 7X50 provides good magnification for the night sky without using a tripod, as the shakiness with higher mag (even 10X) is noticeably worse. And for those who wear eyeglasses with astigmatism and/or a desire to keep them on while viewing, the Scenix 7X50 provides superb eye relief at 20mm -- the 10X50 version has a less desirable eye relief of 12mm.

Yes, like any good pair of binoculars, the Scenix 7X50 can be used for excellent terrestrial viewing. But for hikers/backpackers, keep in mind that 7x50 binoculars can be bulky and heavy, even though the 1.8lb weight of this Scenix compares favorably to other 7x50's out there.

Overall, the Scenix 7X50 represents a high quality choice for astronomers, especially for a budget-minded beginner.

      4.0 Orion Scenix 7x50 Binoculars

      Pros:

      Not costly, excellent daylight viewing.

      Cons:

Borderline use for astronomy, middle 50% best for viewing.

      Comments:

I had another opportunity to use these nice binoculars last evening during a decent night of binocular viewing. These were loaned to me for the night.

This is a nice pair of binoculars. The cost new from Orion is $79 plus shipping. It comes with a decent strap, is rubber coated, has BAK4 porro prisms and is multi-coated. The FOV is 7 degrees and the weight is 1 lb-12 oz. A soft case and caps are included.

While looking at Jupiter, I found the four moons of Jupiter but the planet showed no color or bands. I would not want to go cluster hunting with these as the 7 power is just not enough for star gazing. But as a complement to a telescope it is quite workable. The middle 50% of the field was the best. The balance goes from fair (75%) to poor (90%). But the middle 50% is great. This binocular also does excel for birding and daylight viewing. I recommend these for those reasons.
