XT4.5 - good starter or grab and go scope
Pros:Good kid's scope or second scope for an adult with a big scope
Cons:You need to be realistic about what you can see with any small scope
Comments:I originally purchased this scope for my young son. I have also used it several times when I wanted to take a quick look at something but didn't want to take the time to set up my SCT and wait for it to cool down. The scope body is attached to the base by springs, and the attached handle makes it easy to grab the whole scope and move it outside.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
I've found the views to be very good. Obviously it does not collect as much light as a larger scope, but it works well for the Moon, planets, and the brighter clusters.
Orion has included two reasonably decent eyepieces as well, so one doesn't have to buy better eyepieces before being able to see anything.
The scope was very easy to put together using the excellent instructions. I have made a couple of modifications to improve usability. I built a simple stand to bring the eyepiece to eye level (you can use a small table too.) I also replaced the finder scope with a red dot finder, which makes it easier to aim.Sort by
