4.0 Great widefield astronomical binocs for the money

      Pros:

Fully-multicoated, BAK-4 prisms, true widefield views, sharp on axis performance.

      Cons:

A bit soft on the outer 5-8% of the FOV.

      Comments:

My review is going to read like the previous two reviews. The Orion 10x50 Ultraviews are one of the best values in astronomical binoculars on the market. Good quality glass in the fully multi-coated objectives, BAK-4 prisms, and quality construction for under $200. Oh, I forgot to mention a 6.5 degree FOV?

In my use not quite the 7 degrees another reviewer mentioned, but pretty close, and certainly fantastic performance at this price point. Another nice thing about the Ultraviews is that they can focus on objects as close as eight feet away, which is great for birding and other daytime uses. On the down side, and as the other reviews note, the outer edge of the FOV is a tad soft, but its really not that bad. You can get better edge performance in widefields, but you have to spend twice as much. The Ultraviews are also tripod capable.

5.0 Orion 10x50 WA Ultraview Binoculars

      Pros:

Fully Multi-coated lenses; 22mm eye relief; Ten year limited warranty; Made in Japan.

      Cons:

Maybe a little heavy for some users.

      Comments:

These are fantastic binoculars! They sport a generous 7 degree wide field of view with fully multi-coated lenses and BAK-4 glass prisms for superior light transmission. They are rubber armored and have a very precise focuser that doesn't bind, even under the coldest of conditions. Mine happen to be a pair of the older models that have the soft fold down rubber eyecups, as opposed to the newer twist lock type.

Eye relief is a generous 22mm, which is a godsend for eyeglass wearers. There is the standard +/- diopter settings that work smoothly and holds the selected settings with no problems.

These Ultraviews present a field of view that is absolutely gorgeous and show pinpoint stars out to the last 10% of the field of view. Star clusters, double stars and nebulae are all prime targets for these binos. The views are fantastic!

The newer units have a ten year warranty and are manufactured in Japan.....just more icing on the cake. At around $170, these Orion Ultraviews are hard to beat. Highly recommended.

4.0 Great Binoculars For All Uses

      Pros:

Eye relief, wide angle, BAK4 prisms, solid construction, FMC, tripod mount capable

      Cons:

      Soft outer FOV

      Comments:

Generous eye relief that is fully adjustable, nice wide angle, excellent construction, solid coatings, and great customer support - what more do you want for $150!?!? Sure, they get a tad soft in the outter 15% of the FOV, but it doesn't detract from the view. Absolutely excellent for astronomy, either planning a star hop or just enjoying the nice wide field views! If I could ask for 1 thing, it would be a focus lock. It seldom gets bumped, but just to be extra safe.
