Pentax SMC-XL 10.5mm
Pros:Excellent in everything; Great fit & finish; No kidney beaning or blackouts; Soft eyecup.
Cons:None
Comments:This was possibly the very best high-powered eyepiece I used at a recent star party I attended. During the night a friend brought over his 10.5mm Pentax EP to my f/10 SCT and let me use it for a while. What a superior eyepiece!
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
This eyepiece was just wonderful on globular clusters. The Moon was the correct color rather than the off brown I'm used to with almost no lateral color. This eyepiece gives sharp, high contrast views on almost all objects you look at. There is no kidney beaning or blackouts while moving your eye. Light transmission was excellent.
With the soft eyecup it was a very comfortable eyepiece to use. With black backgrounds and pinpoint stars the feeling is of a very flat field. In comparing this to a 10mm Radian on this night, the Radian came in second best - no question on this. The eye relief is a very nice, although mostly standard now, 20mm and the apparent FOV is 65 degrees. If you can afford this line, you'll definitely get your money's worth. A very nice eyepiece!Sort by
