      4.0 Great little wide-field refractor

      Pros:

Very good build quality, great wide-field views.

      Cons:

Some chromatic aberration on brighter targets.

      Comments:

Short focal length 80mm achros--like the AT1010--have been passed over by the amateur community recently for ED scopes. Stellarvue still sells the Nighthawk Aplanat (I think), Antares has the Sentinel and Orion the ST80, but thats about it as far as I know. The Synta derived ED scopes now dominate the small refractor market. This is the nature of technology, of course, but don't let this deter you from picking up an SV AT1010 should you come across one in the used scope market. At the $150 that it usually goes for, the AT1010 represents an excellent value. The AT1010 sports a very well corrected cemented achromatic doublet. For visual work the AT1010 is going to match the ED scopes on 99% of targets. Only with respect to medium-high power viewing of lunar or other solar system targets will it lag the ED scopes. What it really excels at is low power, rich wide-field views, and here it gives up nothing to even a high priced ED scope like its new Nighthawk ED relative. Stick it on a nice alt-az mount and you have and ideal grab-and-go scope for wide-field scanning.

4.0 Stellarvue AT-1010 (white verison) OTA only

      Pros:

Very easy to use and very well built; High quality.

      Cons:

      Only 3.1 inch aperture.

      Comments:

I just love this scope. Its a perfect "grab and go" scope if you only have a few minutes to view the night sky. I bought this scope used on Astromart a couple of years ago and have never been disappointed. Its stats are: Focal length 480mm, f-ratio f/6, 80mm/3.1 inch aperture. The scope comes with a built-in metal dew shield and is very well built like a tank in the U.S.A. The optics are great, and the focuser is superb and very light to the touch. As a beginner scope or a secondary quick use scope this one works well. New this one cost almost $350.00.
