In the 1.25" series Tele Vue included a long eye-relief 40mm focal length in the series with a 43° apparent field. Like the 55mm, its focal plane is at the barrel edge for maximum field in the 1.25" format.
Since TeleVue introduced their Plossls in 1980, they have won praise and patents, including a patent in Japan. Tele Vue Plossls, designed by Al Nagler, have been a recognized benchmark of performance and value in the class of 50° apparent field of view eyepieces. While the Plossls may be Tele Vue's least expensive eyepiece line, they still enjoy the same care and attention to detail as their most expensive. While it's easy for other manufacturers to vie for the lowest price, Tele Vue continues to believe that quality, performance and consistency will ultimately reward you with the most value for your dollar.
Diffraction limited "on-axis" performance is a given. Using more expensive high-index glasses to reduce astigmatism and lateral color at the field's edge, Tele Vue Plossls deliver sharper images than any other brand of 4 or 5 element Plossls or Orthoscopic designs. The faster the focal ratio of your telescope, the greater your visual reward for using Tele Vue eyepieces. Tele Vue Plossls feature full multicoatings for greatest light transmission and contrast. Blackened lens edges and internal anti-reflection threads tweak the last bit of contrast for maximum image detail. The sharper field focuses faint star light into perceptible points and allows those with undriven mounts to gaze longer before repositioning the image.

Cons: Comments:Works well in a Celestron C8, C90, Skytravel 150 and Omegon finder scope. Sufficiently useful to create interest in other TeleVue plossls.

Pros:Excellent construction, lens coatings, and sharp flat high contrast images.
Cons:Blackout, Short fold-down eye cup.
Comments:The Televue 40mm Plossl has the longest focal length of the 1.25" oculars in this set. It is only exceeded by the 2" Televue 55mm Plossl. I must say that the Televue 40mm Plossl is not one of the best eyepieces in this set compared to some of the others, but it is definitely not the worst. I have owned one of these units for over a year and continuously put it use despite its downfalls. Despite its tiny 43 degree AFOV, the images displayed by this ocular are crisp, high in contrast and flat across the entire field. Unfortunately the eyepiece does suffer from "blackout" when you position your eye outside of the focal plane, or too close to the eye lens. I found this to be the case with my 90mm f/11. But when I use the eyepiece for afocal digital camera astrophotography, I can place the camera's lens right up to the eye lens of the eyepiece with no ill effects. Views of star clusters and planetary nebulae look great!

The Televue 40mm Plossl is fully multi-coated, and casts a purplish hue from the eye lens with an under coating of green that is seen when the eyepiece is tilted. It is beautifully constructed and possesses a recessed safety notch in its barrel. This is one large 1.25" eyepiece - weighing in at around a half pound! At first glance, you almost think it is a 2". You will undoubtedly have to re-balance your telescope when using this unit. The fold-down eye cup could be extended a bit more since eye relief is pretty long at 28mm. I got mine used at a great price of around $60.00. It retails for about $118.00 new.Jul 14, 2007Televue 40mm Plossl

Cons:Pricey at $110.00 and its very heavy with a min. view.
Comments:This is one very big eyepiece. For me I couldn't get a complete view. There were too many grey areas, not a total view. So I could not rate this as excellent. Everything including the price is rather large. The price is $110.00 boxed with end caps. The stats are: FOV 43 degrees, field stop diameter 27mm, eye relief 23mm, 4 elements and the weight is 0.5 (1/2) pound, if not a tad more.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
It's very hard for me to not give a 5 star rating, but the largest plossl I can use is the 32mm (Televue). This one is just too big for me. I don't think it would ever fit into the binoviewer I have, although I've never tried. I sold this eyepiece and bought the extra 32mm Televue plossl with the money. All glass is multicoated with the green tint and all Televue plossls are threaded for filters. However I will recommend it for those who will/can use these big eyepieces.Sort bySpecifications
