Manufacturer Description
With the TeleVue Type 5 Nagler 31mm eyepiece, the unique 6-element Type 5 design using four exotic glasses maintains the contrast advancement of the Type 4s while achieving a true field area 82% larger than the 22mm Type 4! Owners of fast Dobsonian/Newtonians can enjoy a larger true field, free of secondary shadowing, than ever before. For example, a 12.5", f/4.5 scope with a Paracorr will deliver a 1.5 degree field (3 Moon diameters), at 53x with a 6mm exit pupil.
All Tele Vue Nagler eyepieces have proprietary tuned full multi-coatings, blackened lens edges, high index glasses, fold-down eyeguards, rubber grip rings, cover for the eyeguard, an undercut in the barrel for extra locking security, and filter threads. All Tele Vue eyepiece lines are proprietary, in-house designs manufactured to their specifications and tolerances. Every eyepiece is individually tested at Tele Vue to ensure it meets high optical and cosmetic standards.
Take a "spacewalk" across a wide, sharp 82° apparent field
Compare a penny to a half dollar to see the relative size between a 50° and 82° apparent field - almost 3 times the area difference! And while others boast of impressive apparent field sizes, Tele Vue's philosophy of "showing no field unless it's fine" stresses full field image quality as the ingredient for impressive views. Blackened lens edges, anti-reflection threads and rubber eyeguards deliver maximum contrast. Adapter skirts for 2" focusers on larger 1¼" models and rubber grip rings are additional Tele Vue "firsts". Even 2"/1¼" barrel models have an additional feature allowing the 2" extension tube (EBX-2120, sold separately) to be screwed on, which permits use of 2" filters as well as 1¼". 100% full field visual inspection on TeleVue's flat-field test instruments guarantees the performance of every Tele Vue eyepiece.
Concept: "You may know there's a long history of naming eyepieces after their designers: Kellner, Erfle and Plossl, to name a few. In the late 70's I designed an eyepiece sufficiently radical that I dared attach my name to it. Even today, I must admit a little discomfort when talking about "Nagler" eyepieces.
With "Naglers", my aim is to approach the wide angle perspective of naked eye vision, while maintaining the highest degree of sharpness, contrast, and viewing comfort. The goal is to allow the telescope to virtually "disappear," leaving the impact of "spacewalk" viewing." — Al Nagler
The Type-5 permits the largest true field possible (31mm has 42mm field stop), while the shorter focal length Type-6 models are parfocal, with similiar size and weight and all with a comfortable 12mm eye relief.
The Type-4 models feature about 18mm of eye relief and with the "instajust" eyeguard are best for eyeglass wearers or Dioptrx users in their 22, 17, 12mmfocal length range.

It's great.
Pros:Easy to Use,Accurate,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses
Cons: Comments:It's great. Nothing else to say. And I always check first at AgenaAstro when purchasing eyepieces, etc. because of their prices and customer service. They've always shipped almost immediately, and they were more than accommodating when I had to return an item once that I decided I didn't want.

Jan 3, 2014A Real Winner!!!
Pros:Pinpoint Stars At Edges,Huge Field Of View,Strong Construction,Quality Lenses
Cons:Heavy
Comments:The 31mm Nagler is amazing. If you have a focuser that can handle the weight, this is a must have wide field eyepiece. M31, M35, M37, M42, M45,and the Double Cluster were among my "first light" targets on January 3, 2014 in my 6" APO. I look forward to the fall when Sagittarius is in view. I also plan to experiment with it using my Powermates to expand the magnification.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
I ordered this eyepiece the day after Christmas and received it on Monday, the 30th. I highly recommend Agena for quick and safe delivery (the best packaging in the business in my opinion), excellent customer service and a huge inventory of eyepieces and other accessories. This review was provided courtesy of AgenaAstro.com
Oct 14, 2007TeleVue Nagler Type 5 31mm
Pros:Superb views, 82 degree FOV, Tele Vue quality, Nice eye relief
Cons:Very expensive, Heavy
Comments:This is a very impressive eyepiece and probably the largest and most expensive I've ever had the pleasure to borrow and look through. These big beauties go for over $600 new and one would have to look through one and see how great these are before laying out that much money. I don't know if I would but the views are spectacular, to say the least.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
In a 17" truss dob, this eyepiece showed the Dumbell nebula like nothing I've ever seen in any scope. The FOV was so large and sharp that you actually felt you were in space. For deep sky viewing this eyepiece gives the feeling of seeing so much, with sharp stars without any false color, and pinpoint stars edge-to-edge - no matter where you looked and what you looked at. Clusters and nebulas came into their own. In my 8" f/10 SCT I saw "puff cotton balls" with my Televue plossls. With this eyepiece I saw individual stars on most clusters with a very black background and tack sharp stars. Wonderful views! I don't think this eyepiece would work as well in a very slow scope but it mated well with my f/10 SCT.
The weight is just over 2 pounds, so balancing might be needed in a smaller scope. It features 6 glass elements, eye relief is a very nice 19mm and it is a 2" eyepiece. This is just about as good as it gets, cost wise and quality wise.Sort bySpecifications
