      4.0 Vixen Lanthanum Wide LVW8mm

      Pros:

      Superb views,No blackouts,Nice FOV,Excellent fit and finish,Excellent brightness,Excellent contrast

      Cons:

Heavy on smaller scopes,Minimal lateral color

      Comments:

During the last star party that I went to, there were a number of high powered eyepieces for almost anyone to look through and I did plenty. I was most interested in the "Lanthanum Glass" experience. This was my third eyepiece with Lanthanum glass, and I was pleasantly surprised. This is a rather heavy 8mm eyepiece with excellent fit and finish. I'm told that's most usual with Vixen eyepieces. The field of view is a very nice 65 degrees and eye relief is an excellent 20mm. Brightness and contrast is just superb and the Moon was excellent viewing. However there was a small amount of lateral color but not that much to distract from the view. Mars also was nice with the polar caps and the different colors in view. The field was very flat with pinpoint stars and a black background. On smaller scopes there could be a weight problem, but in my f/10 SCT it was a winner. It is costly, but with this Lanthanum you get what you pay for. This one is right up there with my friend's 8mm Radian. In fact, I along with others gave this eyepiece the edge over the Radian! It also barlows very well and is threaded for filters. This is one very nice eyepiece.
