Product Info
Manufacturer Description
The ZWO IR-Pass Filter passes infrared light with a wavelength of more than 850nm while removing the parts of the visible spectrum affected by poor atmospheric seeing. When you image the planets or Moon with a monochrome or color CCD or CMOS astronomy camera and the ZWO 850nm IR-Pass filter, you get improved results when seeing conditions are less than ideal or when the object is near the horizon. You can also use this IR-pass filter to image planets during daylight because it darkens the background sky.
This filter is not suitable for visual observation.
The ZWO 850nm IR-Pass filter is housed in a 1.25" cell and comes with a protective plastic case.
Manufacturer part # IR850NM1 (previously also known as # IRPASS).

Great Filter to Have
Pros: Cons: Comments:Construction is robust, and threads fit nicely in all my equipment. The lens and coatings are well executed. Images are very nice throughout the field of view, no distortions or other aberrations.
Bottom Line: Would you recommend this item? Yes
This filter passes high into the IR band, thus it is dark. With my 85mm refractor and smaller the frame rate is slower and the gain is higher. That's to be expected. With my 6" Maksutov the frame rate is fast and the gain isn't that high. BTW, I'm using an ASI290MC.
I imaged Venus with my 85mm APO and was actually able to get cloud structure in the image. It's a great filter for Venus, as I have found out. I don't expect this filter to be usable on Deep Sky Objects. I have filters much better suited for that.
I wasn't expecting that much from a filter at such a low price point. Wow, have I been pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend this filter for imaging the bright planets in IR wavelengths. Keep in mind the frame rate and gain have to be adjusted for the subject and scope aperture, especially so with small scopes, but the resulting images are very interesting.

Sep 2, 2017Excellent but not suitable for outer planets or dso!
Pros: Cons: Comments:This filter is suitable for inner planets but for outer planets you have to crank up the gain and exposure times and its difficult to get a nice image. It works better with venus and the moon. I guess thats why the manufacturer only image his hand because its a challenge to image something dimmer. for the price it makes another accessory that will be used sometimes. Next time i will get the RG610 or 642.
